Vibrant arrangements help colour your world

SUE Caruana is used to creating beautiful things with her hands.

A pastry cook and cake decorator for many years, Sue would make her own flowers by hand either by icing or with chocolate.

In an effort to help a friend with her Art and Flower Market, Sue branched into floral arranging and the aptly named Sue's Flowers was born.

Sue said floral arranging hadn't started out as simple as she had imagined.

"It took some time to find a good and reliable flower grower and especially to learn all about the different flowers including what worked well together, the different season types,” she said.

"Although that market folded, I wasn't about to let all that work go to waste so applied for a stall at the Caloundra Street Fair seven-and-a-half years ago and haven't looked back since.”

Sue's stunning, colourful and bright arrangements have evolved quite a lot in that time, as has the Caloundra Street Fair.

And Sue is proud to be doing exactly what she envisioned all those years ago when she began.

"Right from the start, I wanted to supply the Sunshine Coast with top-quality, beautiful flowers at amazing farmgate prices,” she said.

"Two years ago, I was excited when my favourite farm asked me to join them and what a team we've made.

"There are two Robertson farms: one grows peonies, alstroemeria and lissianhus with Jeremy Robertson and then in the other months, oriental lilies, asiatic lilies, celosia, the ever-popular sunflowers and a few new varieties starting this season with Adam Robertson.

"Robertson Flower Farms grow the best-quality flowers and have generations of growing experience behind them.

”It works perfectly to add my artistic ability and a passion for helping to make someone feel extra special with a beautiful bouquet of flowers plus lots of market experience. It's been an awesome journey.”

Through the market stall, Sue is able to provide not only farm-fresh, beautiful flowers but also teach customers flower care so they get the best life possible out of their bouquets and arrangements.

Sue said the beauty of flowers was that when it comes to colour these days, anything goes - not like the old days when bouquets were kept to specific colour combinations.

Now she even mixes pinks and oranges together.

"I love being different,” she said. "It makes life interesting and that is one reason our flowers sell so well plus the longevity quality and the price.

"All our flowers are picked just for the markets and florists on the Sunshine Coast and all are arranged and wrapped with love.

"We now have four markets on the Coast: Caloundra Street Fair, Noosa Farmers' and Kawana Farmers' Markets and the Yandina Country Market.

"Caloundra has always been one of my favourites because all the stallholders around us are very friendly and all pride ourselves on our exceptional customer-service skills which can sometimes even be entertaining at times.

"So I hope even if the visitors don't buy anything, they go and tell everyone what an enjoyable time they had there and we've made enough of an impression for them to want to come back.”

Sue's Flowers is on Facebook, where customers can find photos ranging from Robertson Flower Farm fields of flowers to wedding albums and market flowers plus special bouquets.
